Saratoga Elementary School is about a half mile from the South Street Temple. Eighty-six percent of Saratoga students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, double the average in Lincoln Public Schools. Throughout the year, our Social Action Committee supports Saratoga in a variety of ways.
In late summer, our members start collecting school supplies and classroom supplies for our annual Saratoga School Supply Drive. At the beginning of the school year, we deliver notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, tissues, hand sanitizer, and other needed items to the school, so that students and teachers have the supplies they need.
We also maintain a collection shelf where members can drop off food, toiletries, and other necessary household supplies. Throughout the year, we deliver these items to the Saratoga Emergency Pantry for use by the families of Saratoga students.
By partnering with Saratoga in these ways, we uphold the Jewish value of helping those in need, as well as the Reform Movement’s commitment to public education. The South Street Temple is committed to being a good neighbor and to repairing the world (tikkun olam) through engagement in our local community.
